ALTURA - Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation (SMIF) has recently approved funding from its Small Enterprise Loan Fund to Lonny and Sandra Dietz dba Whitewater Gardens Farm in Altura.
Whitewater Gardens is a small diversified farm consisting of 136 acres in Southeast Minnesota that has been growing and selling vegetables since 1996. As consumers demand more and more foods grown locally and sustainably, Whitewater Gardens Farm saw the need to find more efficient ways to produce food in the offseason.
Because of high energy costs to grow food in greenhouses during the offseason, Whitewater Gardens is developing a wood biomass boiler system. Eventually they hope this will be an effective model for other farms to duplicate.
